MACOMB (WGEM) – The City of Macomb is preparing for its second Small Businesses Competition, the first since the inaugural 2018 campaign.
In 2018, the City saw three businesses stem from the competition: Forgottonia Brewing, The Crafty Coop and Lakeview Medical & Psychiatric Healthcare.
Already, Marketing and Downtown Development Director Savannah Ballard said she’s received several applications.
“There’s a few that are looking to expand and there’s a few that are going to be upcoming businesses that are just trying to get their name out there and will be opening up in the spring,” Ballard said.
$25,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds are allocated towards the competition.
Prospective business owners will attend workshops as part of the competition in order to create an effective business plan. On March 21, those ideas will be pitched to a panel of five judges. $15,000 will be awarded to the first-place pitch, $6,000 to second place and $3,000 to third place.
“It really brings a special uniqueness to our community,” Ballard said. “Being able to invest in those community partners really brings a lot to our community.
In 2018, Forgottonia Brewing took home the first-place prize and still stands strong today.
Co-owner Sean West said when he moved to Macomb, he had thought about creating his own business. When the competition was announced, West said it was the perfect time to execute.
“It point you in touch with other like-minded entrepreneurs, it gave you a deadline to where you had to have these things done for the competition,” West said about the competition.
West chose a brewery because he said there weren’t any when he first moved to town.
He has a message for those entering the competition.
“Make sure you tell everybody about it, this isn’t something you want to keep close to the vest, you’ll never know who is going to be able to help you along in your journey,” West said.
All workshops will occur at the Spoon River Community Outreach Center, 2500 E. Jackson in Macomb. Workshops take place on Feb. 13, Feb. 20 and Feb. 27 and March 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Judging will take place at Park Place, 127 E. Carroll Street.
Ballard can be reached with questions at firstname.lastname@example.org.
